‘Students at HSE University’s Faculty of Physics Receive a World-Class Education’
On October 10, 2016, the Faculty of Physics was created at HSE University. It was the university’s first natural science faculty. Its first master’s students graduated in 2019, its first bachelor’s students completed their studies in 2021, and the first doctoral students will do the same in 2023 after beginning their bachelor’s studies in 2017. In his interview, Mikhail Trunin, Dean of HSE University’s Faculty of Physics, talks about the Kapitsa educational system implemented at the faculty, the results that have been achieved in seven years of work, and what is still missing.
HSE Art and Design School in St Petersburg Launches Fashion Design Track
Starting from 2024, applicants to the HSE Art and Design School in St Petersburg will be able to choose a new track in Fashion Design—something unique to the city’s fashion industry. Students of the new track will study according to a special programme developed by the HSE Art and Design School. The track has already been successfully tested on the Moscow campus and has shown impressive results, judging by the careers of its graduates.

This academic year, one of the courses of the HSE School of Communication will be taught entirely in the virtual space. A personal avatar of the teacher will help students through the process. The students will complete the course by implementing their own project in the metaverse.
Winner of International Olympiad in Informatics 2023 Enrolled in HSE University FCS Programme
Valery Rodionov, member of the Russian team who took gold at the 2023 International Olympiad in Informatics, has enrolled at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. The intellectual competition took place in early September in Hungary.
Faculty of Economic Sciences Holds Math BootCamps for Those Starting Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees
More than 200 future bachelor’s and master’s students from around the world spent the last two weeks of summer improving their mathematical knowledge and honing their problem-solving skills. The free online classes have been held for the fourth year in a row. They allow first-year students not only to succeed in their studies, research, and project activities at HSE University’s Faculty of Economic Sciences (FES), but also to quickly integrate into the international community of students, graduates, and teachers.
FCS Students Win at International Mathematics Competition
Three bachelor’s students from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science programme in ‘Applied Mathematics and Information Science’ recently participated in the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC), winning two first prizes and a second prize.

Vladimir Averin is a fourth-year student at HSE ICEF. He was named the overall winner of the Econometrics Universiade 2023, an annual competition organised by Moscow State University, having come second in the competition last year. In 2023, Vladimir will start his PhD studies at Yale University (USA). Oleg Baranov is a graduate of Moscow State University, the New Economic School, and the University of Maryland. He also lectured and ran a popular course on market design at the University of Colorado. He recently passed review for a tenured position at HSE University, and served as the Head of the International Recruiting Committee at the Faculty of Economic Sciences in the 2022–2023 academic year. He will also begin teaching the course ‘Microeconomics 2’ on the HSE and NES Joint Programme in Economics in September 2023.
