Doctoral Education in Russia in Need of Reform
In an interview for CIRGE Washington University on the ongoing reforms and pending challenges in Russian doctoral education, Senior Research Fellow at HSE’s Institute for Higher Education, Igor Chirikov explains the peculiar economic, social and bureaucratic problems and academic traditions that are hampering the careers of Russian academics but he also gives reasons to be optimistic about change for the future.
International Students Want to Continue Their Studies at HSE
In the second semester of the study exchange at HSE more than thirty new international students are arriving from our partner universities in Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, South Korea and the USA. Another 30 foreign students who came for the autumn semester will be staying on. Half of them had planned initially just to spend one term at HSE but they liked it so much they decided to stay until the end of the academic year.

Classics in New Economic Sociology
On January 27, 2015, HSE First-Vice Rector Prof. Vadim V. Radaev and Dr. Greg B. Yudin announced the closure of ‘Classics in New Economic Sociology’ - a mega translation project of the HSE Laboratory for the Studies in Economic Sociology. The project ran from 2001-2015.
‘When We Study History, We Must Be Introspective’
Nathan Marcus, Assistant Professor of History, recently joined the HSE campus in St. Petersburg. A scholar of Modern European History, he has a book that will soon be published by Harvard University Press. Recently, he spoke with the HSE news service about his research and teaching interests, as well as on the important role that studying history plays in today’s society.

First-year Advertising Students Practice Organizing a Conference
On the 28th January the VI international conference Raising Effectiveness in Social Advertising in Russia, ESARUSSIA-2015 was held at the Russian Public Chamber. Students from theHSE Faculty of Communications, Media and Design helped to organise it as a practical in their project seminar on Advertising and Public Communications. The students were entrusted with everything from writing press releases to finding sponsors.
