Such a high ratio of senior citizens to the working-age population is common in rapidly aging countries such as Japan (360), Germany (316), and Italy (309). By comparison, in Russia today, there are fewer than 200 senior citizens per 1,000 people of working age.
These data are presented in a report by Evgeny Andreev, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Institute of Demography, entitled ‘China’s Demographic Prospects’. More on the results of the study can be found on the OPEC.ru website (in Russian).

In mid-April 2024 representatives of several leading universities in China visited HSE University in Moscow. Across the globe, countries are witnessing dramatic shifts in the relative proportions of younger and older generations in their demographic makeup. Even in African states, signs of an emerging demographic decline are becoming evident. By 2050, two thirds of people aged 65 and over will be living in low- and middle-income countries.
