Higher Education in Russia and Beyond (HERB) team presents the 8^th issue of a journal aimed at bringing current Russian, Central Asian and Eastern European educational trends to the attention of the international research community. This issue covers the transformation of higher education in former Soviet republics.

HSE increased its overall score this year from 73.9 in 2015 to 74.9, allowing it to take 35^th place in the ranking.

Tatjana Kanonire received her PhD in Psychology from University of Latvia in Psychology. She joined HSE two years ago.  First, she spent a year at the International Research and Teaching Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research.  Since October 2015 she has been working at the Centre for Education Quality Monitoring of the Institute of Education.  Tatjana has talked to The HSE Look about her research interests and teaching activities at HSE.

Ivan Lysko, a professional rugby player, played for Russian national youth teams at both the European and World championships, and today is Vice President of the Russian Rugby Premier League and coach of the HSE team. He told us about the benefits of this sport and about how to join the rugby club at HSE.

The first ‘I Like Trip’ festival was held at HSE Media courtyard, 2/8 Khitrovsky Pereulok. During the day, visitors had the chance to sample national dishes cooked by HSE students from all over the world, learn folk dances (and other kinds of dance), find the job of your dreams in tourism at the careers fair, and get some inspiration from open yoga classes. You could also choose how to spend this summer with the student travel club ‘I Like Trip’ or HSE Tourism Club.

At a time when industrially developed countries are facing migration pressure, Russia needs to take a fresh look at immigration to assess its geopolitical benefits and prevent inherent social risks; a smart migrant integration policy can provide a solution.

Marina Chashko, HSE student on Master’s Programme in Foreign Languages and Cross-cultural  Communication, has participated in the first University Model United Nations in Venice as a representative of the New Zealand delegation in the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee. Marina has talked about her experience and explained why taking part in MUN is critical for all young people interested in the current international situation, even for linguists.
