Professor Kenneth Pinnow:'These summer programmes are important for promoting global understanding and individual growth'

Kenneth Pinnow, Associate Professor of History from the University of Pittsburgh has been specializing in the history of Soviet Union and Russia for a nearly three decades. His current research interests are medical ethics and human experimentation in Russia and the USSR andearly Soviet criminology. He shared his impressions on the Summer School organized jointly with the Faculty of History of the HSE Saint-Petersburg Campus.

Government and Business in search of a new balance

The Kremlin wants to change its relations with the business elites. While one part of the ‘government vertical’ hopes to maintain the status-quo of the mid-2000s, another one trying to broaden the social base of government to include medium-sized businesses. But if the bureaucrats want to win support and improve the investment climate in Russia, representatives of other elites need to be drawn into the discussion.

Laboratory for Comparative Social Research of the National Research University Higher School of Economics has organized the 3d LCSR Summer School on “Multilevel Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MCFA) and Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling (MSEM) in MPLUS”. The main course in the LCSR Summer school will be held by professor Hermann Dülmer. Staff Members of the HSE Faculty of Business Informatics Participated in the IEEE Conference on Business Informatics

The IEEE Conference on Business Informatics took place from July 15 to 18, 2013, at the Vienna University of Technology in Austria.

Researchers from Italy have been working on a joint project with the HSE’s Professor Olga Demidova looking at “The Political Economy of Youth Unemployment”. Professor Enrico Marelli, and Prof. Maria Laura Parisi, Economists at the University of Brescia and Elina De Simone from the University of Naples Parthenope, answered the HSE news portal’s questions about their research into youth unemployment in Russia and Italy.

Volunteer Clowns in Moscow

The children’s festival ‘Red’ recently took place place in Moscow. The event was organized by Konstantin Sedov, HSE graduate. Konstantin is founder of the ‘Hospital Clowns’ charity, which has been active since 2008.

HSE Gets Closer to English Readers

The Higher School of Economics has created an official Facebook page in English for foreign student applicants and teachers who are considering work or study in Russia.

An ‘International Buddies Club’ Has Been Created at the HSE

Friendship clubs exist worldwide in almost all universities that participate in international exchange programmes. They help new international students adapt to their new country and find friends.

Migrants, Segregation and Civil Peace

Only 20% of residents in Qatar are native citizens of the country. The rest are migrant workers. Cheap workers come from the East, more expensive ones from the West. Trevor Johnston has studied the way this authoritarian regime uses deliberate segregation in order to maintain civil peace during this mass influx of migrant workers engaged in the economy of the country.

Konstantin Sonin Appointed HSE Vice Rector

Konstantin Sonin, Director of Microeconomic Research and Professor of the Higher School of Economics (the HSE) Subdepartment of Institutional Economics, was appointed Vice Rector of the HSE on August 1, 2013.
