HSE University Students to Help Russian Brands Enter Chinese Market

Foreign students from HSE University recently took part in the project of the School of Entrepreneurship for international students ‘Start your business with Moscow!’. Wang Yue, 31, first-year student of the HSE GSB Master's programme in International Management from China, became one of the most active participants in the project. She shared her impressions of participating in the training with the HSE News Service.
The project ‘Start your business with Moscow!’ is aimed at developing business skills and subsequent employment of the most successful and talented graduates of Russian universities from foreign countries. The organiser of the project is the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Fifteen students from HSE University submitted applications, and ten of them were selected to participate in the course.

When I studied at Xi'an International Studies University (XISU) in China, I majored in Russian language and literature, and since then I have always had the desire to learn more about Russian culture and traditions.
I initially planned to study management in China because I had already worked for many years and I wanted to use my work experience as a basis for gaining more specialised theoretical knowledge.
Then, by chance, a friend told me what a great university HSE is, and I decided to return to school and continue my studies. Next I learned about the International Management programme at HSE University and the opportunity to come to beautiful Moscow, so I made the choice to come here without much hesitation.
I really like the people in Moscow and can see that they are very friendly and good-natured
Russian, one of the top three most difficult languages in the world, is still a challenge for me. At the moment my language skills allow me to carry out everyday conversations, but my vocabulary may not be sufficient enough to engage in more professional conversations.
My project within the 'Start your business in Moscow!’ school is to help Russian brands enter the Chinese market. We have a friend in our class who is the founder of a perfume brand, which I found very interesting. I asked if I could use his brand as my own internationalisation project. Not only did he agree, but he also provided me with a lot of information about their brand and products, which helped me out a lot!
The course consisted of six modules and included training on the following topics:
- Team building, networking, and project work
- Financial, legal, and accounting support
- Business modelling and planning
- Marketing
- Sales
- Project management
The project modules are very useful for those who want to start a business in Russia, as they cover the necessary knowledge such as relevant laws, how to pay taxes, etc, and leave enough time for a live question and answer session with students.
In general, combining project training modules with master's studies is not particularly complicated; the biggest challenge was Russian being my second foreign language
I am very glad that I had the opportunity to attend this course in addition to my studies, and I hope that similar courses will be available. I think that, with the further strengthening of friendship and cooperation between Russia and China, it is likely that after graduating from university I will be able to work in the field of Russian-Chinese trade.

Wang Yali has been interested in Russian language and politics since her time as an undergraduate at Peking University. After graduating with a degree in Asian and African Languages and Literatures and a second degree in International Relations, she pursued a Master’s in International Relations at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University–Moscow. She is now pursuing a PhD at the Doctoral School of Political Science, examining Russian narratives of ‘East,’ ‘West,’ and its own place among them.
HSE Scholars to Join Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences
The Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences has officially begun its work in China. It brings together research centres in mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, and Earth sciences, with participation from HSE University scholars. During the launch conference, the Sino-Russian Mathematics Series project was also presented; it envisages the publication of 100 textbooks and monographs over the next ten years. HSE University representatives Ivan Arzhantsev and Sergei Lando have joined the project’s editorial board.
International Winter School for Students from Two Leading Chinese Universities Held at HSE MIEM
Chinese students gained practical knowledge in the design, assembly, and operation of small spacecraft and systems, as well as in quantum mechanics, superconductivity, and materials science for solar energy.

Arina Kurbetyeva is a third-year student of the Bachelor’s in Digital Technologies and Telecommunications run by the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM). During her second year, she spent one semester in China at CUHK-Shenzhen University as part of an academic mobility programme. ‘Analytical Centres and Programmes for PhD Students’: HSE University–St Petersburg Offers New Formats of Cooperation with PRC
The Rope Shop Educational Space of HSE University–St Petersburg hosted a conference on the present and future of Russian–Chinese relations. Together with Luo Zhanhui, Consul General of China in St Petersburg, leading experts in Asian and African Studies discussed vectors for the long-term development of the countries, the synergy of joint projects, and future educational partnerships.
Transition to Sustainable Development Requires Deep Structural Transformation of Business
A group of researchers has proposed assessing the ESG transformation of businesses through the partner turnover ratio in raw material and distribution supply chains. The researchers note that the path towards sustainability requires a deep and often costly restructuring of partner networks. This and other papers were presented at the Third International Annual Conference ‘ESG Corporate Dynamics: the Challenges for Emerging Capital Markets.’
HSE University Hosts China Academy of Art Delegation to Strengthen Academic and Research Cooperation
On December 12, HSE University welcomed a delegation from the China Academy of Art — one of the most prestigious creative universities in Asia. The visit built on the dialogue launched in September and reaffirmed the mutual interest in collaboration outlined during the visit of Natalia Logutova, Deputy Director of the HSE Institute for Creative Industries Development, to the academy’s campus in Hangzhou. The parties discussed ideas that could form the foundation for long-term partnership—from digital reconstructions of historical spaces to joint educational programmes and research initiatives.
HSE University–St Petersburg Hosts International Expert Day of Social Entrepreneurship
HSE University–St Petersburg has hosted the third expert meeting devoted to social entrepreneurship. The event featured presentations of two books that explore the roles of universities and business in creating conditions for developing a socially responsible society.
‘You Need to Look Ahead and Listen to Your Inner Voice’
In early December 2025, the HSE International College of Economics and Finance (HSE ICEF) held a student meeting with Stefan Dürr, founder and President of the EkoNiva Group, at the HSE building on Pokrovsky Bulvar. The entrepreneur spoke about his journey from running a small farm in southern Germany to building the largest agribusiness in Russia, and offered advice to aspiring entrepreneurs on how to succeed in the industry. The event continued a series of meetings between ICEF students and prominent Russian practising economists and business leaders.
