‘We Have a Middle Class, But It’s Small, and It’s Struggling to Survive’

Mark Urnov, Academic Supervisor of the HSE Faculty of Politics, talked to us about his view of the middle class and about the research he’s been carrying out with Irina Soboleva and Anton Sobolev in four Russian regions, as well discussing the reasons for the popularity of this work among international researchers.

HSE and NES: Joint Bachelor of Arts Programme

In September 2011 a joint undergraduate programme was launched by the Higher School of Economics and the New Economic School. Vladimir Avtonomov, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Economics, and Konstantin Sonin, Vice Rector of the New Economic School (NES), told us more about the programme.

We had a Lot of Opposition

Sir Michael Barber, a former Chief Adviser on Delivery to the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, the head of McKinsey’s Global Education Practice, and a Visiting Professor and a member of the HSE International Advisory Committee told HSE News Service if we can compare institutions with their graduates’ Unified State Exam results, how to pay teachers bonuses, and what mistakes British reformers made and how Russia can avoid repeating these.

HSE attracts Leading Scientists

On October 29th the results of the open public competition of the Ministry of Education and Science for financial support of research conducted under supervision of leading scientists in Russian universities were announced. Fedor Bogomolov, Professor of Mathematics at the New York University, and Ronald Inglehart, Professor at the University of Michigan Center for Political Studies, will both receive grants for research work at the HSE.

Political Atlas of the Modern World

How can we compare political systems in contemporary world politics? What measurements can we use to understand the political development of countries whose histories and culture make them so different? Political Atlas of the Modern World is a unique reference source which addresses these questions by providing a comparative study of the political systems of all 192 countries of the world.

‘The future is more than just tomorrow’

Geoffrey Crossick, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, took part in the HSE International College of Economics and Finance graduation ceremony on September 16th. 'Political Correctness Constrains Researchers'

From July 26th - 30th the VIII International Council for Central and East European Studies (ICCEES) Congress took place in Stockholm. The event takes place once every five years and brings together researchers from Russia and East Europe. This time 14 teachers and researchers from the HSE took part in the Congress, the largest delegation from one institution at the forum. Some participants of the Congress told us about the event.

On the Basis of Meritocratic Principles

Recently at the decision of the HSE Academic Council Andrey Melville was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Politics, and Professor Mark Urnov became Academic Supervisor of the Faculty. The new dean Andrey Melville told us about the prospects for the Faculty's development, about research activities and undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
