The HSE Centre for Student Academic Development, in cooperation with the Student Development Office and Ingroup CTC, held a large-scale student science festival in December. HSE University has launched a new International Laboratory for the Study and Assessment of Dangerous Geophysical Phenomena. Alexander Kostinskiy, Head of the Laboratory and Deputy Director of HSE MIEM, explains the laboratory’s future work, its important research and practical applications, and the role of international cooperation in the new laboratory.

On December 27, Andrey Maslov was appointed Director of the HSE Centre for African Studies. In his interview with the HSE News Service, Mr. Maslov talks about the Centre’s objectives, whether HSE students will be engaged in the Centre’s activities, Russian-African relations and the practicalities of doing business in African markets.

The Centre for Quantum Metamaterials is one of the new international laboratories that will be launched at MIEM, HSE University, in 2022.  Alexei Vagov, Head of the Centre, speaks about the main areas of the Centre’s research, its team, and future research cooperation.

Students in the Transmedia Production in Digital Industries Master’s programme have done a project on the professions of the future. Covering trends and key professions, the project helps students assess potential academic trajectories. The main part of the project is a non-fiction book ‘What’s Next? Professions of the Future’, which is based on the ‘Androids and Electric Sheep’ podcast by Forbes and X5 Group. The book has been published on the Ridero platform.

A regular session of the HSE Academic Council considered the key aspects of university’s operations in 2022. In particular, the business plan for 2022 and the planning period of 2023 and 2024 was approved, the decision to rename the Faculty of Communications, Media and Design to the Faculty of Creative Industries was made, and the Regulations on Organization of Interim and Ongoing Assessment of Students were approved.

Evgeniy Terentev has been appointed Director of the HSE Institute of Education. HSE Life talked with the new head of the institute about his plans in the new position and about innovations in education.

In October, the HSE Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology launched the Geodata Centre. In addition to developing its own research and commercial projects, the Centre provides auxiliary educational services related to the collection and processing of spatial data, performs geographic analysis, captures video and photo using drones, and processes data received via remote probing of the Earth. Tatiana Aniskina, Head of the Centre, speaks about the importance of geodata.
