Sociologists: Conservative Consumers Dominate Russian Middle Class

The Russian middle class cannot be regarded as a homogeneous and uniformly stable social group. Similar income levels often mask significant differences in financial strategies, lifestyles, and levels of economic security. This is the conclusion reached by sociologists at HSE University. The study has been published in Voprosy Ekonomiki.

The researchers identified at least four major groups within the Russian middle class: cautious conservatives, active investors, conscious consumers, and those who rely primarily on borrowing to maintain their accustomed standard of living.

For their study, sociologists at HSE University used data from the 2024 Economic Behaviour of Households project. The sample included approximately 3,000 residents of Russian cities with populations exceeding 100,000. Respondents were classified as middle class based on their income, education, and occupational status. The findings were also compared with data from a nationwide survey of 6,000 Russians conducted in 2024.

Despite the differences between the groups, most members of the middle-class share several common characteristics: they tend to save more, spend more cautiously, and invest more in education, health, and professional development than the general population. However, the study shows that the groups within the middle class respond differently to economic instability and the rising cost of living.

The largest group, according to the study, consists of conservative consumers, who account for approximately half of the entire middle class. These people tend toward cautious financial behaviour: they avoid debt, rarely use complex financial instruments, and strive to live within their means. At the same time, they continue to save and invest in education and professional development.

About 10% of the middle class are active investors. This is the most financially confident and secure group, whose members use investment and brokerage accounts, follow the stock market, and actively invest in education, career advancement, and professional development. According to the researchers, this group comes closest to the classical concept of the middle class as an economically stable social group with a long-term planning horizon.

The researchers identified another 15% of the sample as conscious consumers who combine savings, mortgage commitments, and active consumption. They are more likely than others to spend on travel, cultural leisure, healthcare, children’s education, and improving their overall quality of life. At the same time, they tend to report the highest level of satisfaction with their financial situation.

Those who rely on loans were identified as the most vulnerable group, accounting for about a quarter of the Russian middle class. These respondents actively use credit cards and consumer loans not only for major purchases but also to maintain their usual standard of living. Credit helps them cover vacations, children’s education, household appliances, and everyday expenses. According to the researchers, this segment of the middle class is the most affected by economic conditions such as rising prices and increasing loan interest rates.

The authors of the study suggest that financial habits are becoming one of the key defining characteristics of the Russian middle class today. However, within this group, people adopt very different strategies to maintain their standard of living: some rely on savings and investments, while others depend on loans. This indicates that the Russian middle class cannot be regarded as a homogeneous social group.

'We have observed that different strategies for adapting to economic realities emerge within the middle class. Some people focus on long-term planning and building financial buffers, while others continuously balance income and expenses and are more dependent on loans. Taking this into account is important not only for researchers but also for the government, financial institutions, and businesses, as the middle class largely shapes consumption patterns, demand for services, and the overall dynamics of the economy,' emphasised one of the study authors, Alina Pishnyak, Director of the Centre for Studies of Income and Living Standards at the HSE Institute for Social Policy.

Scientists Develop Bacterium-Sized Microlaser

An international team of researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed microlasers that emit deep-ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 255 nanometres. The devices operate at room temperature, and the smallest of them measures just two micrometres in diameter—roughly the size of a bacterium. These microlasers could be used in sensors, spectroscopic systems, photonic chips, and communication devices. The paper has been published in Optics & Laser Technology.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children

Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian

Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'

Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. HSE researchers examined the careers of 600,000 graduates of Russian secondary vocational education programmes and found that at the start of their careers, the gender wage gap reaches 23%, doubling after three years. HSE Researchers Make Aldehydes Perform Dual Function

Chemists from HSE University have discovered a way to carry out a reductive addition reaction without using an external reducing agent. Instead, the required 'resource' is supplied by the aldehyde itself, one of the reaction participants.
