HSE Participates in Conference on International Exchange of Professionals in China
From October 21 to 24, 2025, the 23rd Conference on International Exchange of Professionals took place in Shanghai and Beijing, bringing together more than 7,000 scientists and experts from around the world. HSE University was represented by Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, and Vasily Gromov, Head of the Laboratory for Semantic Analysis of the Centre for Language and Semantic Technologies.
The Conference on International Exchange of Professionals has been held since 2001 to promote cooperation in the field of science and technology between China and other countries. Its motto is ‘Gathering global talents—pursuing win-win cooperation.’ The event showcased scientific and technological achievements and provided a platform for professional dialogue.
The scale of this year’s conference was particularly large, with 2,500 attendees at the grand opening and the total number of participants exceeding 7,000. Participants were divided into groups, each coordinated by a major Chinese university. HSE representatives were part of the Peking University group.
On the second day of the conference, Ivan Arzhantsev spoke at the section dedicated to international cooperation and talent exchange events in the field of mathematics. His talk focused on the experience of the Faculty of Computer Science in research development, the creation of new educational programmes, and participation in student competitions in mathematics and collegiate programming. Additionally, the participants presented the Flexibility and Computational Methods project, which is being implemented jointly by the Scientific and Educational Laboratory on Algebraic Transformation Groups and the Institute of Mathematics of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Vasily Gromov
The next day, the conference participants from the Peking University group left for Beijing, and on October 24, Vasily Gromov delivered a report at Peking University on the ongoing projects of the HSE Laboratory for Semantic Analysis. The laboratory conducts research on natural language using computer science and applied mathematics methods, considering language as a set of vectors in a semantic space.
At the end of the conference, Peking University hosted a jury meeting for the second research project competition of the Sino–Russian Mathematical Challenge Fund. Zhang Jiping, Director of the Sino-Russian Mathematics Centre, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and renowned expert in modern algebra, served as the chair of the jury, with Ivan Arzhantsev participating as a member. The jury summed up the results of the competition, which will be announced in the near future.
‘In recent years, HSE University has been increasing its cooperation with Chinese universities, and our faculty is moving in this common direction. We have a lot to learn from our Chinese colleagues, and they, in turn, are interested in learning from the Russian experience. Representatives from both countries are eager to participate in joint projects. In particular, HSE submitted three times more applications for the Sino–Russian Mathematical Challenge Fund competition compared to the previous year. The jury also noted the high level of activity of our research teams,’ Ivan Arzhantsev emphasised.

Discovering Science through Russian Language: HSE Prep Year Students Present at International Conference in Kazan
On May 23, 2026, the V International Scientific and Practical Conference ‘Discovering the World of Science’ took place in Kazan at the Preparatory Faculty for International Students of Kazan Federal University. Four students of the HSE International Preparatory Year took part in the event: two delivered their presentations in person, while two participated online. Their work was supervised by Acting Director of the International Prep Year Irina Isaeva and lecturer Ekaterina Kozhemyakova.
HSE and Peking University Expand Cooperation in Civil Society Research
A seminar involving Russian and Chinese scholars on cooperation between the state and non-profit organisations was held in Beijing. Participants discussed the evolution of institutions, cooperation practices, and challenges facing the development of the non-profit sector, and also presented the results of their research. The meeting concluded with agreements to expand joint projects and academic exchanges.
‘All My Time Is Devoted to My Dissertation’
Ilya Venediktov graduated from the Master’s programme at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics through the combined Master’s–PhD track and is currently studying at the HSE Doctoral School of Engineering Sciences. At present, he is undertaking a long-term research internship at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, where he is preparing his dissertation. In this interview, he explains how an internship differs from an academic mobility programme, discusses his research topic, and describes the daily life of a Russian doctoral student in China.
Direct Dialogue with Leading Universities
An HSE delegation has held a series of meetings with leading Chinese universities: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beihang University, Xi’an Jiaotong–Liverpool University, and Tongji University. The visit programme was organised by the Institute of Education.
China Bets on Expanding Leading Universities, Postgraduate Education, and STEM Fields
At the XXVI April International Academic Conference named after Evgeny Yasin at HSE University, one of the distinguished speakers was Prof. Liguo Li of the School of Education at Tsinghua University. He spoke about changes in the structure of higher education in China in line with national strategic priorities, including a proposed 1.7–2-fold increase in the number of leading research universities.
