At the end of May, HSE University in Moscow received a delegation from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp, Brazil), which has held a strong, long-standing partnership with HSE. The meeting in Moscow took place as part of the International Partner Week, which was held from May 19 to 22 by HSE University–St Petersburg. The event was attended by Unicamp representatives: Rafael Dias, Director of International Affairs, and Milena Serafim, Associate Director of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

The key topic of the meeting was cooperation in social policy, a field where both universities are leaders in their respective countries.

Svetlana Biryukova, Chief Research Fellow of the Centre for Comprehensive Social Policy Studies (in Russian), complemented her speech by sharing how HSE's scientific developments translate into real-world politics. Unicamp representatives showed great interest in the topic and offered to launch joint research projects under the guidance of professors from both universities. This initiative will not only encourage student research activity but also strengthen the ties between the universities.

Maria Nagernyak stressed that the State University of Campinas was HSE University's key partner in Latin America, and the cooperation between the two universities had already reached a strategic level.

Considerable attention was also paid to online education. Anastasia Vyskubina, Head of the Online Project Support Unit, spoke about the work of the HSE eLearning Office (in Russian). She emphasised the high-tech nature of educational platforms, the rich resource base of the university, and the popularity of online programmes among applicants and students. Anastasia suggested developing joint online courses and modules with Unicamp and noted that digital education enabled an unhindered exchange of experiences even between universities as far apart as HSE and the State University of Campinas.

The parties also discussed the success of the double degree Master's programme, which the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge had been implementing since 2024 together with Unicamp—one of the flagship projects of cooperation between the two universities. ‘In our opinion, it is wonderful that the programme not only meets the demands of the time but also resonates with the students. For example, HSE students are already coming to Brazil under this programme, which we are very happy about. We hope that cooperation in this area will remain at the same level, and we will be able to launch double degree programmes in other fields as well,’ Rafael Dias said.

Oleg Korneev, Academic Supervisor of the International Relations and Global Studies educational programme, emphasised the long-standing and close cooperation of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs with Unicamp, expressing interest in deepening the cooperation.

The parties also discussed short-term programmes for students—summer and winter schools, which the universities plan to jointly organise starting this year. ‘At our university, most of the teaching is conducted in Portuguese. But if, say, twenty HSE students came to us for a summer or winter school, we would be happy to organise a programme in English for them,’ Rafael Dias added.

The cooperation between HSE University and the State University of Campinas continues to develop, opening up new opportunities for researchers, students, and teachers from both universities and strengthening the ties between Russia and Brazil in the field of education and science.
